Current Beauty Favourites

Today I thought I'd share with you some of my current beauty favourites, some old, some new, a bit of this, a bit of that.

Loreal Caresse Lipstick in Fashionista Pink. I've been using this almost everyday lately, its a halfway house between a lipstick and a lip balm. I think this is one of the fairest shades in the range (I bought it at the supermarket and they had limited shades), and it's incredibly difficult to photograph it on the lips. None the less its a lovely product and I can't wait to get some more. If you've tried these I'd love to hear what are your favourite shades for next time I pop to Boots.

Urban Decay Naked 2. I FINALLY got my hands on this little beauty. I've wanted it since Day 1, a given really as my love for the original knows no bounds, however I've just not had the cash to splash. When my boyfriends Mum brought me this back as a surprise from Duty Free after her holidays I was absolutely over the moon. I wasn't expecting it either so it was a really lovely surprise. I will be doing a full review of this once I've had chance to use it more but the packaging is a definite improvement!

Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer. I picked this up on a whim in the supermarket, I normally use the Collection 2000 Illuminating Touch concealer but thought I'd try this for a change. Its a lovely little concealer, great for under eye circles I find and it doesn't break the bank either. What more could you ask for?

Last but not least, an oldie but a goodie. With all of the warm weather the UK has been experiencing over the last couple of weeks, I whipped out my old faithful Mac Blonde MSF, and oh my did I forget how wonderful she is. I got this back in the good old days when it was released in the Blondes, Brunette and Redheads Collection (early 2009 I think). Those were the days when Mac Collections were actually covetable. Any how, I digress, I adore this product, not too much glitter, just the right about of highlight, the perfect pink flush for the cheeks, this suits my skin tone down to the ground and I've used it solidly for the last 2 weeks. I use the darker pink as blush for my cheeks, and use the lighter bit as highlight on my cheek bones and down my nose. A light hand is required as always with this kind of product, but the finished results are lovely.

My lovely bicycle - Pashley Britannia Review

After first getting my mitts on my beautiful bike a couple of months a go I thought it was time to do a blog post all about her. I promised photos with baguette and flower filled wicker baskets galore so here it finally is!

I've wanted a bike for a few years now, and I've always wanted a classic style bicycle with a traditional step through frame and of course a wicker basket on the front. After months of research, this year for my birthday I finally got one. I decided on the Pashley Britannina in White, although I was originally going to go with the Pashley Poppy in pink, but changed my mind after riding the Britannia and preferring the rounded handle bars. I completely fell in love with it. I love literally everything about the way it looks. The colour, the Honey coloured Brooks leather saddle, the leather handle bar grips, the ding dong bell, the dynamo light, the cream tyres, the basket, EVERYTHING! Every opportunity I get I am out on my bike, I've had so many lovely comments and approving looks as I cycle along on balmy evenings, and it help's me keep fit too. I absolutely love her to death and would recommend her a 1000 times over, however there are a couple of things that are worth mentioning if you are considering a Pashley;

This bike (and most Pashley bikes) is heavy, making climbing hills tricky (especially if you're not used to it) It has 5 gears which help, but still these bicycles aren't really built for hills in my honest opinion. If you live somewhere nice and flat then you have nothing to worry about, she rides like an absolute dream, but it is something to think about if you live somewhere that's quite hilly.

The saddle needs coating with Proofide which helps to soften the leather and help the breaking in process, and ideally you need a rain cover to protect it if you will be riding in the rain. This may seem like something silly to note but no one told me about this and I went through the painful task of breaking in the saddle without doing so (I literally couldn't sit down properly for a couple of days). Once I found out about it I proceeded to treat the saddle with the proofide and it has been so much more comfortable ever since.

The gear's and brake's are concealed hub breaks. I still don't fully understand how these work but there is a bedding in period where the gears need re-adjusting. It's pretty straight forward once you know what you're doing, and after doing it a couple of times I have no bother with it at all now.

Pashley bikes are on the expensive side, I researched so many alternatives but I completely fell in love with the bikes and loved the fact that they are hand built in England. Once I had set my heart on one, nothing else compared. I was lucky enough to get money from of my nearest and dearest for my birthday and also saved up some money for the bike, but like I said there are so many gorgeous alternatives available out there if you love this style of bicycle but don't want to spend a lot of money.

I don't actually use the basket that often, I find it easier to cycle without it and only really use it to put a drink or sandwiches in if I'm not taking a bag with me. The basket can make the front end of the bike quite top heavy and difficult to steer, but you get used to it in no time and it looks super pretty.

Last but not least I would say this bicycle is for leisurely/road cycling, you can't really go through tame forest trails or through the countryside either for that matter. The bike is supposedly a "hybrid" bike but has no suspension other than on the saddle. It's for this reason my boyfriend insists on me having an alternative mountain bike for any other "off road" cycling. 

Overall I absolutely adore this bike and would recommend it to anyone, I would never ever get rid of her and I am genuinely so happy when out cycling in the sun. I bought the bike from The Big Red bike Company in Harrogate, it is the Pashley Britannia in White and I have the 17.5" frame.

Insanity Review Week 1 - My thoughts and general diet/fitness chat.

Well I'm very pleased to report I completed Insanity Week One. As promised I thought I would share my thoughts on the first week of the programme.

The main thing I think I need to get across is that this is hardcore. Really hardcore, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to be writhing around panting in a pool of their own sweat after a workout. After everything I read about this programme, I thought can it really be that intense? Yes it can. To me this workout is ideally aimed at people who already workout regularly and are at a good level of fitness. Not someone like me who only exercises a couple of times a week. That's not to say however that it isn't possible to do this workout if you're not already fit - with hard work and dedication anything is possible!

In a nutshell Insanity is a hardcore home workout dvd from Team Beach Body - the same people who brought out P90x. Insanity is made up of plyometric drills and interval training made up of cardio, strength, resistance, power, core and ab training moves. You do not need any equipment like weights or resistance bands, all you need is yourself. The key is that the workouts use max interval training, so you perform long bursts of high intensity exercises followed by short periods of rest, this lets you burn up to 1000 calories an hour and supposedly provides you with amazing results over the 60 day period. The before and after body transformation photos are pretty impressive! You exercise 6 days a week for approximately 40 minutes each day performing the types of exercises outlined above, and one day a week you get a breather and do a yoga style workout.

As already mentioned, I already exercise a couple of times a week, mainly in the form of cycling, but when I started this it was a real shock to the system. The first day was the fit test, this in itself was completely brutal.
The following few days left my body broken, my calf muscles were literally on fire and I couldn't make it up the stairs without feeling the burn. I genuinely didn't think I would be able to do the workouts some days as I was so sore, but I persevered through, and the exercise actually helped to ease the muscle soreness.
I also started drinking banana milk or strawberry milk after each workout - I read online that this is the equivalent to the Results and Recovery Formula recommended by the guys at Team Beach Body. They advise you drink this after each workout to help with recovery - it's essentially a drink made up of 4 parts carbohydrates to 1 part protein. The specific recovery drink they recommend isn't available in the UK so after some research I found out that one of the best alternatives is chocolate milk - I don't particularly like this though so opted for strawberry or banana. I don't know whether it was this, or the fact I was getting used to the exercise, or a combination of both, but after days 4/5 the muscle soreness started to ease significantly.

The yoga style workout half way through was a welcome break and helped me push on for the following few days. By Day 7 I was seriously happy to have a rest day, although it did leave me feeling like something was missing out of my daily routine. I'm now onto Week 2 and it isn't getting any easier but I'm absolutely determined to carry on. I will continue to update you as I carry on throughout the programme but here are a few other things I wanted to mention:

  • My weight has stayed the same for the last 3 weeks. I'm not sure why, as I've been exercising daily and sticking to my Weight Watchers programme. This is a little disheartening I can't deny it but I know I'm doing everything right so will just have to wait it out. I'm going to do my measurements later (I keep forgetting) and monitor those as well.
  • I took my before photos which was also a shock to the system (an 18 mega-pixel dslr camera doesn't lie lol) but it was a real motivator to get going with things.
  • Being sweaty everyday has led to washing my hair, every, single, day. I can't lie, this is highly annoying.
  • I bought some protein powder but I'm not really sure when is best to incorporate this into my day? Any tips, links or advice on this would be greatly appreciated as I have never had protein shakes before.

If you don't think you are ready to try Insanity just yet I would highly recommend Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. This is a similar concept with very similar workouts over 30 days for 20 minutes per day. It would be a good idea to do this first then maybe move onto something like Insanity or P90x.

Scrumptious Salad

This is one of my favourite salads. Ever. Its so delicious and full of good stuff. Here's how you can give it a go yourself;

1. Choose your salad base, preferably mixed salad greens. I love baby spinach and rocket.
2. Add some sliced cucumber and red onion.
3. Cut up some new potatoes and boil them for around 25 minutes (or until soft) Then pop them in a roasting tin with some olive oil, a sprinkle of salt, pepper, garlic salt, and mixed herbs. Cook until they look roasted to your liking (about 20 minutes at 180/200 degrees)
4. Whilst the potatoes are in the oven, cook some green beans to your liking (boil/steam)
5. Cube or crumble some feta cheese and add to the salad - I use 30 grams.
6. Add some honey roast salmon flakes or any flaked smoked salmon.
7. Drain the green beans, chop them up if you like, pop them on top.
8. Finally take out your herbed potatoes and add them on top.

Voila - its that easy, and so so tasty. I didn't have any dressing with mine, but you can add your favourite salad dressing or I really recommend adding some some sour cream and chive to really finish it off.

River Island Wedge Trainers and Mint Green Bag

Just a quick post to share with you some lovely bits I got last month from River Island.

First up are these wedge high top trainers. Oh yes I bought into this latest trend without a second thought. These are everywhere at the moment, since Isabel Marant revamped high tops and popped a hidden wedge inside, designers and high street stores everywhere have been releasing their take on them.
I didn't personally like the offerings in Topshop, but as soon as I saw these babies in River Island I knew they were right up my street. Perfect paired with jeans or leggings, they are a nice change to my converse, don't break the bank, and give me extra height too. As with most things, they're not for everybody but I love them.

Secondly is this mint green bag. It was an absolute nightmare to photograph - please forgive me. I bought it mostly for the colour, I would prefer less detailing but hey ho there you go. I love mint green at the moment, can't get enough of it!

Last but not least I wanted to mention another love affair of mine which is with my pale pink pleather jacket. (LINK) I havn't had chance to photograph it yet but will upload a post as soon as I can. I got it from Miss Selfridge about a month ago and I have worn it every day more or less since. Stay tuned :)
